The doors opened at ten and the room was full by half past. There was no lineup posted, no flyer beyond a single line passed between people who had earned the number, and still three hundred bodies found the address and stood shoulder to shoulder on a concrete floor that had never been asked to hold that much weight. Those who arrived late were counted at the door and turned away without argument. It is understood, in this city, that a room has a limit and the limit is not negotiable.

Pinebox played for ninety-one minutes. The set was not announced and will not be released. Somewhere in the second half came a dub that no one present has been able to name since, a low unhurried thing that arrived without warning and left the room quieter than it found it. The rig was borrowed. The rig did not fully recover. One cabinet was carried out at two in the morning with its cone split clean through, and it was carried out the way a body is carried out, slowly and by four people who did not speak.

By the time the lights came up the floor was marked, the walls were wet, and the room had been decided against. It closed the following week without a statement. No one has claimed the recording. No one has offered one. The night is survived by the three hundred who were counted at the door and by nobody else.
