Eleven people were present when the first record dropped, and the lot was large enough that eleven people read as none. Mortise played to that emptiness for half an hour without adjusting anything, which those who have watched the work for long enough recognised immediately as a refusal rather than a mistake.

The lot filled the way water finds a low place. People came from the street because the sound was on the street, and then from further out because the people on the street had begun telling other people. By the final twenty minutes there were roughly two hundred bodies in a space that had held eleven, and none of them had been invited.

The property was fenced before the end of the month. Mortise has declined to name the night and has not played the lot again.
